About me
Ravi Agarwal, DDS, is a full-time board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and the Chair for the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. Agarwal received his dental degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry before bringing his southern warmth to MedStar Washington Hospital center for a 4-year intensive residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Agarwal spent time as the residency program director supervising the education of the twelve OMS residents for ten years. Dr. Agarwal specializes in corrective jaw surgery, the treatment of facial trauma and secondary repair jaw deformities. He sees patients for mouth and jaw pathology such as growths, cysts and tumors, wisdom teeth extraction, dental implants and bone grafting. His clinical interests include tissue engineering and 3D treatment planning. His research interests include the aspects of intraoperative surgical techniques in jaw surgery as well as management of outcomes in post-surgical facial trauma patients. Dr. Agarwal also maintains privileges for pediatric oral and maxillofacial care at the Children's National Medical Center.
Dr. Agarwal emphasizes individualized treatment through the use of unique 3D treatment planning. This method involves generating a model from a CT scan, performing a virtual surgery and then making guides based on the virtual plan to improve accuracy and precision. He also utilizes tissue engineering techniques in order to avoid harvesting an individual's own tissue or bone for reconstructive procedures.
Dr. Agarwal's practice is unique because he is located in a hospital where he is part of a multidisciplinary team that has the ability to treat complex issues of the face and jaw at a much higher frequency. Being located in a hospital gives him access to more advanced technology as well as a group of talented and capable colleagues and physicians. Teamwork results in better outcomes for his patients. For this reason, Dr. Agarwal is heavily involved in teaching and training residents at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, whom he works with every day.
Dr. Agarwal is an advocate for bringing the use of complex dental implant rehabilitation as well as continuing the implementation of minimally invasive procedures through the use of 3D treatment planning and digital technology to the MedStar Washington Hospital Center. When not working on the development of a methodology to incorporate digital technologies into the practice of oral surgery, Dr. Agarwal is cheering on UNC Tar Heels sports teams.
"I approach my patients as I would a friend or family member. This means that I take the time to sit with them to talk and more importantly to listen. I'm transparent when I talk about the risks and benefits of any surgical procedure that I may present. Growing up in the South has tremendously fostered my gentle and caring nature, which invokes confidence in my patients about the care I provide as well as my ability to satisfy their treatment needs.
The best compliment a patient can give me is to recommend me to their friends and family because they feel that they received the best treatment possible."
