About me
Stefan Schieke, MD, is a board-certified attending dermatologist affiliated with MedStar Health at Lafayette Centre, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and is Associate Professor of Dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center. Before joining MedStar Health, Dr. Schieke served as Assistant Professor of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an attending physician at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, some of which are consistently ranked as the top hospitals in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report.
As a general dermatologist, Dr. Schieke sees patients for general dermatology complaints, including psoriasis, eczema, acne, skin cancer, and more. In addition to treating general dermatological conditions, Dr. Schieke specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous lymphoma, including cutaneous B-cell lymphoma, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and pseudolymphoma (cutaneous lymphoid hyperplasia).
For the treatment of cutaneous lymphoma, he focuses strongly on a multidisciplinary approach, and together with his colleagues uses everything from skin-directed treatments, such as phototherapy, topical steroids, and nitrogen mustard; to photopheresis; radiation therapy; and various anti-cancer drugs, such as bexarotene, interferon, and more.
His clinical interests include cutaneous lymphoma, non-melanoma skin cancer (basal and squamous), and excisions such as the surgical removal of non-melanoma skin cancers. His research focuses on understanding the metabolic needs of lymphocytic cancers, i.e. lymphoma and some types of leukemia, during their various disease phases – beginning, progression, and treatment resistance – and how physicians can target the disease in each specific phase to improve treatment outcomes.
Dr. Schieke is encouraged by advances that have been made in the field of dermatology, more specifically relating to the biology of dermatological diseases, in the past few decades. Today, thanks to the tireless efforts of researchers and physicians, dermatologists are able to prescribe medications that target very selective disease processes. Dr. Schieke looks to clinical trials to provide new and advanced treatment options to qualifying patients, providing advancing tailored treatments and high-end care for patients.
Dr. Schieke received his medical degree and completed a two-year dermatological residency from Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf, Germany. He then joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH for a five-year specialty post-doctoral fellowship before completing a three-year dermatology residency at Boston University Dermatology Residency Program, where he served as Chief Resident.
He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the United States Cutaneous Lymphoma Consortium, the International Society for Cutaneous Lymphomas, and the American Association for Cancer Research.
Committed to the advancement of the field of dermatology, Dr. Schieke has authored numerous research articles, peer-reviewed abstracts, and book chapters. In 2015, Dr. Schieke was accepted into the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) Dermatology Leadership Program (ADLP). In 2018, he received the Young Investigator Award from the Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Schieke is passionate about his research, spending time with his family, exercising, and being out in nature.
Philosophy of care
“As a caring and knowledgeable provider, my goal is to help my patients understand their condition and, in turn, understand the rationale for presenting certain diagnostic and therapeutic options so we can make the best decision for them, together.
“I present options that are most beneficial to my patients’ specific diagnosis by using state-of-the-art and evidence-based data, whenever available.
“I feel honored to have the opportunity to build lasting relationships with my patients. I see myself as a steady presence in my patients’ lives, helping them through each step of these challenging times.”
