About me
Dr. Virginia Steen is a Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and is the Chief of Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She did her medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, Internal medicine residency at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and her rheumatology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh where she stayed on the faculty until moving to Georgetown in 1995.
Dr Steen is an internationally recognized expert in Systemic Sclerosis and has been involved in research and clinical trials for scleroderma throughout her career. She co-established the Pittsburgh Scleroderma Database which has resulted in more than 200 publications about all aspects of scleroderma. She led a nationwide study on pulmonary hypertension in scleroderma and has been a leader in the exciting clinical trials in scleroderma and Raynaud’s over the last 20 years. She has been the rheumatology representative for several pulmonary guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis and was on the Pregnancy Guidelines for Rheumatic Diseases.
She is a Master of the American College of Rheumatology and received an award for Excellence in Investigational Mentoring also from the ACR. She has received multiple awards from the National Scleroderma Foundation including Doctor of the Year, several educational awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Steen is a member of the Magis Society at Georgetown University, Excellent in Teaching, as well as she received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Georgetown Women in Medicine.
