Andrew Tiu, MD

Andrew C. Tiu is a Hematology and Medical Oncology Attending at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. He completed his Hematology/Oncology fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital following residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. Dr. Tiu earned his Doctor of Medicine from Cebu Institute of Medicine, graduating Magna Cum Laude and ranked first in his class.

Dr. Tiu’s clinical and research expertise centers on hemostasis, thrombosis, and myeloid malignancies, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). He advanced the application of global coagulation assays such as thrombin generation assay to predict bleeding and thrombotic risk in patients with bleeding disorders, MPNs, cirrhosis, and hypercoagulable states.

He was the first to demonstrate a significant association between Agent Orange and burn pit exposure among U.S. Veterans and the development of MPNs, highlighting early mutagenesis and increased cardiovascular risk. This work earned the 2023 Conquer Cancer Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. His research has been presented at national and international meetings, including the American Society of Hematology, and published in peer-reviewed journals.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Tiu has guided medical students and residents whose work has received regional and national awards. His career reflects a strong commitment to scientific innovation, veteran health advocacy, and program development, with sustained involvement in multidisciplinary collaborations.
