Erin Giovannetti, PhD, serves as Director of the MedStar Health Economics and Aging Research (H.E.A.R) Institute – part of the MedStar Health Research Institute. She is also Scientific Director of Clinical Outcomes for MedStar Health Clinical Care Transformation. She has a background in health services research and quality measurement. Dr. Giovannetti received a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and completed a research fellowship in geriatric medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her research focuses on measurement science and evaluation of health care delivery interventions with a focus on older adults and adults with multiple chronic conditions. She has worked extensively with health systems to implement and evaluate goal-setting and shared decision-making interventions for complex older adults. She has also experience with testing and implementing novel approaches to patient-reported outcomes for older adults and family caregiver-reported outcomes. Prior to working with MedStar, Dr. Giovannetti was a Senior Research Scientist at the National Committee for Quality Assurance where she led a research team responsible for developing and maintaining geriatric clinical quality measures in the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS). She has also worked with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop novel approaches to measuring health outcomes for the dual-eligible population and adults using Medicaid long-term services and supports.

As Director of the H.E.A.R. Institute, Dr. Giovannetti’s research is focused on developing, evaluating and disseminating novel approaches to delivering care to older adults that result in improved whole-person care, reduced total-cost of care and more equitable care which addresses social determinates of health.

As Director of Outcomes for Clinical Care Transformation, Dr. Giovannetti oversees evaluation and outcome measurement for multiple MedStar Health programs that focus on improving health outcomes and reducing the cost of care for multiple high risk population.  The departments Dr. Giovannetti works with include Palliative Care, Senior Services, Community Health, Diabetes Institute, and Case Management.

Dr. Giovannetti completed her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College. She completed her PhD in Health Policy at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, along with a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
