Frequently asked questions

  • What’s the difference between a CT scan and an MRI?

CT scans use X-ray technology to create detailed images quickly and are often used for evaluating injuries, lungs, or internal bleeding. MRI uses magnetic fields instead of radiation and provides more detailed images of soft tissues such as muscles, joints, and organs.

  • Do MRI exams use radiation and what should I expect during an MRI exam?

No. MRI exams do not use radiation. They rely on magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the body. During an MRI, you’ll lie still on a table that moves into the scanner. The exam is painless but can be noisy. If you have concerns about enclosed spaces, claustrophobia, or anxiety, let the imaging team know in advance.

  • How do I access my imaging results after my appointment?

Our staff will show you how to access your images on our patient portal, but it is recommended that you discuss the imaging results with your referring provider at your next appointment. Patient portal access is located at the top of our website.

  • What imaging services are available at MedStar Health Radiology at Brandywine?

MedStar Health Radiology at Brandywine provides outpatient diagnostic imaging services, including X-ray, ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and other physician-ordered imaging exams used to diagnose and monitor medical conditions.

  • Can I schedule imaging at Brandywine if my doctor is outside MedStar Health?

Yes. Patients may be referred for imaging at the Brandywine location by providers both within and outside the MedStar Health system. A valid imaging order from your provider is required so the appropriate exam can be performed and interpreted.

  • Is medical imaging safe?

Yes. Imaging exams follow established safety guidelines. When radiation is used, the lowest effective dose is applied to obtain accurate diagnostic images. Providers select imaging studies based on clinical need and patient safety.

  • Does MedStar Health Radiology at Brandywine offer lung cancer screening?

Yes. The center provides low‑dose CT lung cancer screening for eligible patients. This screening uses advanced imaging technology to detect lung cancer early, when treatment may be more effective. Your healthcare provider can help determine if this screening is right for you.

  • Does Radiology at Brandywine accept insurance?

Radiology at Brandywine accepts most major insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and exam type, so insurance verification is completed prior to the appointment. Patients are encouraged to confirm benefits and potential out-of-pocket costs in advance.
