"I was diagnosed with NSCLC and underwent surgery in April 2023, where part of my right lung and several lymph nodes were removed. I had to quit smoking before the surgery, and the STAR program provided encouragement and support in my pursuit to become smoke-free.

My determination was nurtured with various motivational and behavioral strategies. When enrolled in the STAR program, I appreciated the value of behavioral counseling and finding accountability through calls. It can be uncomfortable discussing your habits with someone you don’t know or yet trust!

My tobacco treatment specialist provided a line of support and equipped me with valuable knowledge to navigate the complexities of quitting. I gained a deeper understanding of the physical, habitual, and motivational aspects of my decision to quit. Working with a tobacco treatment specialist demystified the process, making it more manageable and less daunting.

I knew I had to quit but did not know where to start. Learning about the factors influencing my smoking habits empowered me to take charge of my journey to quit. The personalized guidance helped me develop effective strategies to overcome challenges and cope with cravings to transition to a smoke-free lifestyle successfully.

Collaborating and feeling supported by Georgetown providers showed me how valuable it is to have a team. I have remained smoke free since my surgery! Embracing the role of a 'walking witness,' I share my story as a passionate advocate for preventative care, early detection, and quit-smoking counseling.”
