About me

Lauren A. George, MD, is a double board-certified gastroenterologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Surgery Center at Takoma Park. She specializes in treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and was named a Baltimore Top Doctor in Gastroenterology/IBD in 2024.

Dr. George’s approach is to closely collaborate with her patients to understand and treat their complex and sometimes sensitive digestive issues. As a specialist in IBD, she is an expert in treating patients suffering from Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, and checkpoint-mediated colitis/immune-mediated colitis. Her primary method of treatment is to educate and manage the various medication and intravenous treatment options available to her patients. She collaborates with other healthcare providers, such as surgeons, to provide the best holistic, comprehensive care. Additionally, she routinely performs intestinal stricture dilation, chromoendoscopy, and advanced dysplasia/cancer screening techniques.

Throughout her career, Dr. George has had extensive research and clinical experience in medical adherence and barriers to treatment in patients with IBD. She is excited by the development of new medications and therapies available to her patients and believes that with the right interventions, therapies, and lifestyle modifications, her patients can expect to return to living their everyday lives.

Dr. George graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Lafayette College. At Drexel University of Medicine, she completed her medical training and was inducted into the the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She then completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. From there, she completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Loyola University Medical Center before returning to the University of Maryland for an advanced fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. George is an active member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American College of Gastroenterology, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, AGA Academy of Educators, and the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine.

Dr. George loves animals and has many pets. She and her spouse foster cats and dogs and volunteer in their free time at dog rescue shelters.

Philosophy of Care

“I love that my work as an IBD specialist allows me to develop a long-term partnership with my patients. I strongly believe that it takes a team of professionals to care for a person struggling with chronic and painful digestive issues, and I am dedicated to a collaborative approach. Together, we will discuss your goals and work as a team to get you back to living your normal life. I promise to advocate for my patients and help them navigate their various treatment options.”
