2025-2026 US News and World Report Best Hospitals Award BadgeWASHINGTON – MedStar Washington Hospital Center has again been recognized among the nation’s top hospitals for cardiovascular care in the 2025–2026 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in healthcare excellence. It is the only nationally recognized heart and vascular program of its kind in the Washington region.

MedStar Washington saw a notable improvement in Cardiology, Heart & Vascular Surgery, rising seven spots to #31—up from #38 last year.

“This honor reflects our team’s unwavering dedication to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to every patient we serve,” said Thomas E. MacGillivray, MD, chair of Cardiac Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and physician executive director of Cardiac Surgery at MedStar Health. “We’re proud to be recognized once again by U.S. News & World Report and this recognition underscores the trust our patients place in us and the outcomes we’re proud to achieve together.”

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,400 hospitals across 15 adult specialties of complex adult care and MedStar Washington is among only 13% of hospitals nationwide that earned a Best Hospitals designation. The evaluations are based primarily on patient outcomes, risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications, and level of nursing care.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center, home to MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute, has one of the highest-volume cardiac programs in the nation. It integrates the cardiovascular programs and services of all 10 MedStar Health hospitals and outpatient practices in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

In addition, MedStar Washington’s three clinical programs—Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, and Urology—have been rated high performing, indicating a high score that did not achieve national rank.

U.S. News also rated how well hospitals perform relative to other rated hospitals in treating patients 65 and older in common procedures and conditions.

MedStar Washington received high performing in 19 out of 22 areas evaluated. They include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, back surgery (spinal fusion), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, gynecologic cancer surgery, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery, stroke, transcatheter valve replacement (TAVR), and – new this year – heart arrhythmia, and pacemaker implantation.
