About me
Alexander Gilbert, MD, completed his specialty training with fellowships in both nephrology and kidney transplantation at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2004. He has had academic appointments at both Harvard and New York University before coming to Georgetown in 2013 to join the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. He has expertise in both the pre- and post-surgical management of transplant patients, as well as managing living kidney donors.
Dr. Gilbert has a particular interest in education, and, for the last 10 years, he has designed and run a lecture series on kidney transplantation for training renal fellows. He regularly speaks on topics in transplantation to general nephrologists, dialysis center staff, and patient groups.
Dr. Gilbert is a regional representative to the United Network of Organ Sharing's (UNOS) Kidney Committee, responsible for the development of national policy regarding kidney transplants. He is also a member of the committee overseeing the management of the new national Kidney Allocation System.
Dr. Gilbert considers himself first and foremost a clinician and working directly with patients is the most rewarding part of his job. However, he also maintains an interest in research and has published on topics in immunology and expanding our ability to safely use donor organs. His current research includes new protocols to prevent recurrence of Focal Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in the transplant kidney, as well as research into the use of two new immunosuppressive protocols to prevent rejection after kidney transplantation.
