About me

Daniel Portney, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic hand surgeon who provides comprehensive care for teenagers and adults with traumatic injuries, infections, and chronic conditions of the upper extremity, including arthritis. He uses minimally invasive approaches to treat some of the most common conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, thumb and finger arthritis, broken bones, and ligament injuries. Dr. Portney is one of few surgeons in the area trained to offer wrist replacement surgeries. He also cares for patients who have functional implants and prosthetics, after undergoing amputation.

Dr. Portney engages his patients in their process of care, taking the time to assure they understand their care options and are key players in decision-making. He offers bedside ultrasound, a technology that provides immediate diagnostic feedback and has been instrumental in elevating the patient care experience. Dr. Portney is passionate about clinical research and has been published in several top hand surgery journals. Through his research, he studies the use of ultrasound and the use of big data to advance orthopedic care.

Understanding how important the hand is for daily living, Dr. Portney’s ultimate goal is to help each patient reduce pain and improve functionality. He sees patients in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Dr Portney was wonderful. He is kind and never acted as if I was imposing on his day. His concern for my health and well being was clear. He explained everything as he was examining my arm and hand. He asks about the discomfort or pain was experiencing and told me what was going on. It was a relief to find out why I was having problems with my arm. It was a nice experience being his patient.
