About me
Dr. Ligeiro is board certified in transplant hepatology, gastroenterology, and internal medicine.
Her areas of special interest and expertise include:
- Compensated and decompensated cirrhosis
- Alcohol-related liver disease
- Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
- Autoimmune and metabolic liver diseases
- Liver transplantation
- Liver tumors
She has published articles in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has been involved in educating medical students as an assistant professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, at University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Dr. Ligeiro earned her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed her residency and fellowships in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
After witnessing her own family’s interactions with the medical system, she knows how important it is for each patient to understand what’s going on with their health. She takes the time to talk with her patients about their condition and why she recommends a treatment or medication so that they can play an active role in making medical decisions.
When she’s not working, Dr. Ligeiro enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking and baking, and knitting.
Dr. Ligeiro is fluent in Portuguese.
