About me
Ivanesa Pardo, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is an active member of multiple professional societies, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where she sits on the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) committee.
Dr. Pardo was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, where she later earned her medical degree at the Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado. She then went on to complete a general surgery residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine, before completing her fellowship training in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Albany Medical Center.
As a fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon, Dr. Pardo specializes in the surgical treatment of obesity through the use of minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy and robotic surgery. She also sees patients for gallbladder disease, reflux disease and other gastrointestinal conditions, hernias, and solid organ surgery.
Dr. Pardo has presented at numerous regional and national conferences and has authored abstracts and peer-reviewed publications. She is an advocate for minimally invasive surgery, which allows patients to recover faster and return to their regular activities more quickly. Additionally, minimally invasive techniques inflict less trauma on the body while still achieving the desired outcome, meaning that patients experience less pain, and therefore, consume less pain medication.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center provides a comprehensive program for patients undergoing bariatric surgery. As part of the support offered by MedStar, patients will engage in an education program working with a team of in-house physicians, dietitians, mental health providers, and exercise physiologist to help them succeed in their weight loss journey.
Philosophy of Care
I work closely with my patients to help them achieve their individual goals. My patients come to me for a variety of reasons. They want to lose weight in order to feel healthy again, to have the ability to play with their children or grandchildren, and to stop needing medications. Whatever your weight loss goal is, that's what I'm going to help you do.
A big part of my practice involves conversation. As an active listener, I promote engaged and open conversation in order to create a comfortable environment where honesty and transparency are key. Through conversation, I aim to ease any anxiety or fear associated with surgery in addition to fully comprehend the goals of each individual.
Patient education is also a key part of my practice. It is important to me that I answer all of my patient's questions in a comprehensive way. I feel proud when patients tell me that they would recommend their families and friends to me for care and that I was always there when they needed me.
