About me
Dr. Figueiro is an experienced fellowship-trained, board-certified kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon with more than 25 years of clinical practice in the field, and an extensive career in clinical and surgical education for transplant fellows and residents. He is also the director of kidney and pancreas transplantation at MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute.
His areas of special expertise and interest include:

Dr. Figueiro earned his medical degree from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Faculdade de Medicina in Brazil and completed his residency at Fundacao Hospitalar de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He completed two transplantation fellowships, one at Hôpital Paul Brousse in Paris, France, and the other at University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital.
He considers it a privilege to care for patients living with organ failure and bridge them to organ transplantation and is engaged in all steps of his patients’ journeys to transplantation. Dr. Figueiro takes time to educate his patients and their family members on all aspects of the transplant procedure, with open and transparent communication, creating a positive environment for informed, shared decision-making.
Dr. Figueiro is actively involved in advocacy work to improve the organ allocation system and promote access and equity in transplantation. He has published book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals. For several years, he has been contributing to the development of transplantation care in South America, specifically in Brazil, where he established several transplant centers and has had a major local impact
