About me
Dr. Kareem A. Zaghloul is a board-certified neurosurgeon practicing at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, exceptionally trained and specialized in epilepsy surgery. This field of neurosurgery offers hope to patients whose epilepsy does not respond well to medication, those with serious seizure disorders related to tumors located in critical brain regions, and others with unique electrical disturbances of the brain.
He began his medical education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he cultivated a broad clinical foundation. Dr. Zaghloul completed his neurosurgery residency and fellowships in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery. He further advanced his expertise through doctoral and postdoctoral training in neuroscience and experimental psychology, establishing the basis for his current research in memory formation and retrieval. His clinical skills were also enhanced by a specialized fellowship in epilepsy surgery at the University of Bonn, Germany.
Dr. Zaghloul’s achievements have earned him recognition as an inductee of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. He is an active member of other prestigious organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Epilepsy Society, and the Society for Neuroscience, reflecting his ongoing dedication to the field.
His practice continuously pioneers innovative neurosurgical techniques through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, developing personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs and health goals. Dr. Zaghloul’s approach—encouraging open communication among physician team members and patients, meticulous surgical technique, and attentive aftercare—provides the best possible outcomes for patients with epilepsy and complex brain conditions. He is committed to supporting ongoing care management by returning patients to their referring physicians, promoting continuity and collaboration toward a shared goal of long-term wellness.
In addition to his clinical interests, Dr. Zaghloul is deeply committed to clinical research, focusing on memory, decision-making, and the development of new therapies for neurological disorders. He regularly presents his research findings at leading neurological conferences and in principal academic journals.
Dr. Zaghloul's clinical and research partner is Dr. Sara Inati, a senior neurologist trained and specialized in epilepsy surgery. Together, they conduct thorough clinical evaluations and manage patients with complex seizure disorders, providing state-of-the-art, customized treatment options. They share the goal of returning patients to the care of their referring physicians for collaborative ongoing management.
