Kaylee Purpura, MD, is an otolaryngologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She is a board-certified, fellowship-trained laryngologist and attends to patients with a wide range of voice, airway, and swallowing disorders. Her expertise includes voice disorders, managing professional voice, vocal fold paralysis and paresis, laryngotracheal stenosis, vocal fold lesions, including benign (nodules, polyps, cysts, and papilloma) and malignant lesions, and swallowing disorders. She is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Purpura treats patients with a combination of medical management, awake in-office procedures, and surgical procedures for various laryngeal disorders. Awake in-office procedures performed by Dr. Purpura include flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy with or without stroboscopy (a procedure utilizing a scope to view the voicebox), vocal fold injections (which allow patients to hear immediate improvement in the quality and strength of their voice), laser treatment of vocal fold lesions, and laryngeal Botox injections. Surgical procedures include endoscopic and open management of airway stenosis and glottic cancers.

Passionate about patient education, Dr. Purpura teaches her patients the anatomy of the throat and larynx, how the vocal folds move, healthier ways to use their voice, and safe swallowing techniques. Her research lies in laryngeal simulation, considerations in difficult airway situations, and the effects of endotracheal tube size on laryngeal injury and stenosis.

Dr. Purpura received her medical degree from West Virginia University of Medicine, where she graduated in the top quartile. She completed her residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, before going on to obtain a fellowship in laryngology at Oregon Health and Science University.

Philosophy of Care

“I always tell my patients that everyone gets the time they need to explain their symptoms and discuss a treatment plan they both understand and agree with. To that end, I will not rush my exams or consultations but will ensure that every patient leaves feeling heard, understood, and in agreement with the plan we create together.”
