About me
Dr. Liudmila Schafer is a, fellowship-trained, board-certified medical oncologist with more than 25 years of experience in the field. She specializes in treating patients with sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that starts in the bones, muscles, cartilage, nerves, blood vessels and fat.
She earned her medical degree from Grodno State Medical University and completed her residency and fellowship in medical oncology at East Tennessee State University College of Medicine, and has specialized training in Clinical and Translational Science, Drug Development and Regulatory Sciences.
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Schafer is an active researcher with a special interest in precision medicine and the development of new cancer treatments. She is an investigator for clinical trials at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She enrolls and connects eligible patients with innovative therapies that may not yet be widely available. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and she has presented at national and international oncology conferences and meetings.
When she’s not at work, Dr. Schafer enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors, scuba diving, musical theater, and reading non-fiction.

Dr. Schafer’s approach is comprehensive, focused treatment to meet each patient’s needs, ensuring they have timely access to care, integrating latest scientific advances and team-based collaboration to deliver coordinated, 360-degree cancer care. She fosters open communication with patients, families, and referring physicians, while connecting patients with the support services they need during and after cancer treatment.
