About me
Lonnie Thach, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Thach treats patients with kidney diseases and dysfunction, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, hypertension, and glomerulonephritis. He holds professional memberships with the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Thach takes a holistic and patient-guided approach to medical management. After thoroughly explaining and reviewing his patients’ lab results, he explores all available options, including lifestyle changes like exercise and diet, medication, and dialysis modalities if needed. At the end of the day, he wants to ensure that his patients are fully aligned and comfortable with the prescribed treatment plan.
His clinical interests include urine microscopy, hypertension, and medical education. Committed to staying abreast of new research and advances in his field, he is currently interested in up-and-coming treatments and drug discoveries for glomerulonephritis and the role of multi-target therapy in managing chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Thach obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas and his Masters in Biology from Southern Illinois University. Fascinated by the basic sciences and inspired by the doctor-patient relationship, he went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine degree. After completing his residency, he transferred to McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University for his fellowship training.
Dr. Thach is conversationally fluent in Khmer. In his free time, he loves playing racquet sports, exploring the outdoors, and trying all the different foods that DC has to offer.
Philosophy of Care
“Being a good doctor means always doing what is best for my patient. I want to understand my patients’ goals, respect their desires for how far we go with treatments, and create a feasible plan that fits their lifestyle. My recommendations will be holistic, evidence-based, and patient-focused. Above all, I want my patients to feel heard and that their needs and questions were addressed during their appointment.”
