About me
Margaret “Maggie” Hamm, CRNP, is a nurse practitioner who is board certified in adult-gerontology primary care at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Department of Thoracic Surgery. She specializes in pre and post-operative care of thoracic surgery patients treated for thoracic malignancies (lung and esophageal cancer) and benign foregut disorders (hiatal hernia and achalasia). She also is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Maggie’s approach to care centers on providing a high level of support to patients throughout their surgical experiences. She begins by sharing what they can expect before, during, and after procedures. She then performs pre-surgical medical evaluations that include diagnostic testing and preparation education. She also helps them with pain management, surgical wound healing, surgical pathology reviews, and ongoing cancer monitoring.
Maggie supports a thoracic surgeon who specializes in robot-assisted surgeries – a minimally invasive procedure that uses robotic technology to provide enhanced precision and flexibility during cancer treatments. This innovation often results in shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries. Referring physicians should know that Maggie actively collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of experienced pulmonologists, oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists. Together, they develop comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for each patient.
Philosophy of Care
“I am a compassionate clinician who provides insightful education and comforting support. I have thoughtful conversations with patients to better understand their hopes and concerns. At the same time, I work diligently to help them navigate surgery, recover at home, and return to their normal daily activities as soon as possible.
One activity that I enjoy is yoga. It aids me in building strength, improving flexibility, and increasing mindfulness. It also helps me to be keenly perceptive of my patients’ needs for kindness and patience.”
