About me
Mimi Wu Young, MD, is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Along with fellowship training in microsurgery, her specialties are implant- and flap-based breast reconstruction, super-microsurgery for lymphedema treatment, body contouring, as well as general reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. She also offers an innovative approach to breast reconstruction using omental free flaps for patients who may otherwise not be candidates for autologous breast reconstruction.
Dr. Wu Young has a background in general surgery at Northwestern, plastic and reconstructive surgery training at the University of Chicago, and a microsurgery fellowship at Stanford. These experiences provided her with opportunities to work with many leading trailblazers in breast reconstruction and lymphedema surgery. Dr. Wu Young’s passion for comprehensive cancer care also led her to become an International Visiting Scholar at ASAN Medical Center in Seoul where she honed her super-microsurgical reconstruction skills to treat lymphedema alongside world-renowned experts.
Dr. Wu Young’s approach to care centers on partnering with patients to help them fully understand surgical goals, openly discuss reconstructive options, and empoweringly make informed decisions about their individualized plans. Through multidisciplinary collaborations and team-based protocols, she aims to deliver comprehensive and compassionate care to every patient. At the same time, Dr. Wu Young’s research interests in breast reconstruction and lymphedema furthers her commitment to advance evidence-based investigations that pioneer new methods to improve clinical outcomes.
In her free time, Dr. Wu Young enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, listening to live music, exploring the outdoors, and traveling the world.
Philosophy of Care
“It is common to feel vulnerable and overwhelmed when choosing to have surgery. That’s why I believe in taking the time to have meaningful and empathetic conversations with my patients. From answering every question to discussing all concerns, I want to nurture relationships that are respectful of each patient’s mental and physical comfort as well as aligned with their reconstructive and aesthetic goals. By working together, we develop personalized plans that are unique to every patient.”
“As a female plastic surgeon and mother, I have an inherent understanding of not only the physical changes in a woman’s body after various life events, but also the psychological impacts it may bear. Such shared experiences – combined with my passion for helping patients feel comfortable in their own bodies – motivates me every day.”
