About me
Nikiya Asamoah, MD, is a board-certified adult gastroenterologist affiliated with MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. Asamoah specializes in treating digestive disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. She also helps patients with general gastroenterology issues, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. She performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including hydrogen breath tests, video capsule endoscopy, esophageal dilations, upper endoscopy, and colonoscopy.
Dr. Asamoah’s clinical and research interests include chronic inflammatory conditions, primarily inflammatory bowel disease. Passionate about pediatric and adult gastroenterology care, Dr. Asamoah has a particular interest in the transition of care as children enter adulthood. She enjoys working alongside patients to help them understand the long-term risks of treatments and medications for their chronic inflammatory conditions.
Dr. Asamoah earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She then completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center.
As a respected gastroenterologist, Dr. Asamoah is the recipient of the CCFA Visiting IBD Fellowship Award from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America and the Teaching and Tomorrow Program Grant from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr. Asamoah is also affiliated with many professional organizations, including the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Physicians, and the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
When she’s not working, Dr. Asamoah enjoys jogging, traveling, and spending time with her terrier-mix, Lexa.
Philosophy of Care
“I’m focused on providing patient-centered care. I have heard many patients say that they know their bodies, and I trust that they do. It is my job to help correlate their symptoms and what they are feeling to disease processes to offer them the best treatment options. To help people most, it is important to build a strong patient-doctor relationship. I want my patients to feel comfortable with the care decisions that we make as a team. My goal is to treat the patient’s overall health so they can live their lives normally.”
