About me
Dr. Ali is a fellowship-trained, board-certified transplant nephrologist with extensive experience treating highly complex patients. Before joining MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute, Dr. Ali served as medical director of the Kidney Transplant program and chief quality officer of the Transplant Service at Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse, New York.
He has special expertise in kidney and pancreas transplants, combined transplants such as liver–kidney and heart–kidney, and reducing the amount of anti rejection medication patients need after transplant. He also focuses on recurrent kidney disease in transplant recipients and hard to treat CMV infections.
Dr. Ali earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his residency at University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York, and internship at Mt. Sinai, New York, and two fellowships—one in nephrology at New York Medical College in New York city and the other in transplant nephrology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
His research, focused on post-kidney transplant complications and management and recurrent kidney disease in transplant patients, has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Ali’s approach to caring for his patients emphasizes treating the whole patient, not just individual aspects of kidney disease. He encourages patients to make healthy lifestyle choices part of their treatment in addition to medical treatment.
When he is not working, Dr. Ali enjoys music, reading, playing soccer, jogging, hiking, and biking.
