About me
Taryn Travis, MD, is an attending physician in The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and an assistant professor of surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. As a burn specialist, Dr. Travis specializes in acute and long-term burn care. Her practice encompasses critical care of the burn patient, surgical intervention for skin injuries, as well as later interventions for the scars that result from burn injury. She has a special interest in LASER scar revision to improve the function, symptoms, and appearance of patients with hypertrophic scarring from a variety of causes.
Dr. Travis received her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in 2010. She then joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center for a seven-year residency in general surgery, during which she spent two years as a burn surgery research fellow focusing on hypertrophic scarring. During her last year of training, she served as Chief Administrative Resident. Finally, she completed one year of advanced burn care training at MedStar Washington before joining the attending surgeon staff at The Burn Center.
Dr. Travis is involved in the education with regard to burn care of surgical residents, medical students, and other members of the community, including firefighters, paramedics, nurses, physician assistants, and other physicians. As a Cura Personalis Fellow at Georgetown, she guides medical students on their journey from student to physician. She is also an instructor for the Advanced Burn Life Support for the American Burn Association and Advanced Trauma Life Support courses for the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Travis is an active member of the American Burn Association and The American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. She also serves with the Emergency Preparedness Working Group of the MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is a member of the Subcommittee on Evaluation and Assessment of the curriculum of Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Philosophy of Care
“My personal experience as a family member of someone who was very badly burned is what has guided me to this specialty. When I was young, my father survived a large, life-threatening burn injury and was able to return to a life of family, hobbies, career, and fulfillment. The ability to empathize with the fear and uncertainty of patients with burn injuries, as well as their families, guides my approach every day.
“I’m dedicated to my profession and to my patients. The team I work with in The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center accomplishes care I could never accomplish alone. The multidisciplinary approach to caring for burn injuries allows us to succeed in saving the lives of our patients and getting them back to enjoying those very lives.”
