Washington, D.C., – Dec. 5, 2016 – Eric Wisotzky, MD, chief of the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the director of Cancer Rehabilitation with MedStar Health Physical Therapy and Nicole Hanrahan, MD, Cancer Rehabilitation fellow with MedStar NRH recently published a new article titled “Deconstructing Postmastectomy Syndrome” in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinics of North America Journal.
Abstract:
Postmastectomy pain syndrome is a common consequence of breast cancer treatment that can lead to impairments and limited participation at work, during recreation or day-to-day activities. Pain can originate from multiple locations in the body. A detailed evaluation to determine the specific cause or causes of pain will help guide the clinician to successfully manage this pain syndrome. There are many available treatments, but more evidence is needed for the efficacy of rehabilitation, pharmacologic, and non-pharmacologic therapy. There is evidence for some effective treatments to prevent this syndrome, but, here also, more research is needed.
