BALTIMORE, Md.—(March 29, 2018)—Leigh Ann Curl, MD, an attending orthopedic surgeon at MedStar Harbor Hospital and with MedStar Sports Medicine, as well as the head team orthopedic surgeon for the Baltimore Ravens, has been elected president of the NFL Physicians Society, a professional organization for the nation’s physicians who treat members of the National Football League.

As president of the NFL Physicians Society, Dr. Curl will help provide direction and support for the physicians and athletic trainers in responsible for caring for the athletes, and ensure they get the highest standard of medical and surgical care.

Dr. Curl, who joined MedStar Harbor Hospital in 2005 and has been with the Ravens since 1998, is also assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles. She has served as team physician for the University of Maryland Terrapins, the New York Mets, USA Women's Basketball, USA Women's Rugby, Johns Hopkins University and St. John's University in New York.

Andrew Tucker, MD, medical director of the MedStar Health Sports Medicine program at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, and head team physician of the Baltimore Ravens, is a past president of the society, having served from 2007-2009. The position was most recently held by Robert A. Heyer, M.D., of the Carolina Panthers.

Dr. Curl is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine. She is board certified and trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut, where she played collegiate basketball. Her expertise is sports-related injuries and complex conditions of the shoulder and knee.
