Dr. Sohn brings an extensive background in surgical oncology, leadership, education, and clinical research.
WASHINGTON — Vance Sohn, MD, is the new director of the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. With more than two decades of experience, Dr. Sohn brings a distinguished background in surgical oncology, clinical research, and healthcare leadership. He most recently served as a surgical oncologist with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University, and vice president of Medical Affairs at a clinical research organization.

Dr. Sohn specializes in surgical oncology, with expertise in cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and sarcoma malignancies.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he completed his General Surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center and a Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He obtained his MBA from the University of Tennessee.
Throughout his military career, Dr. Sohn held key leadership roles, including program director, chief of General Surgery, and various positions within the Office of the Surgeon General. He retired from the U.S. Army in 2024 after a career marked by advancing cancer care at local, regional, and national levels.
