BALTIMORE — The unmistakable sounds of the Ravens Marching Band traveled throughout the parking lots and hospital lobby, beckoning all in earshot to join the football fun. This year marked the second annual Ravens Crucial Catch Tailgate Experience for cancer patients and their families.

The band was the newest addition to what’s become the largest hospital event of the year with the Baltimore Ravens and MedStar Health. Cancer patients, their families and their care teams were invited to an afternoon of tailgating right in the hospital. The event gave fans an opportunity to celebrate the season when ongoing cancer treatment might prevent them from attending a game.

Having a good time makes you feel better,” said breast cancer survivor Nicole McFadden. “This is one of the important things to attend with my family.”

McFadden was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding a lump at age 34. She now encourages everyone to advocate for their health.

“I am a crucial catch. I was able to catch my own breast cancer,” she said. “Programs like Crucial Catch are so important in our communities, for our health and for our future.”

Ravens Super Bowl XXXV alumnus Qadry Ismail and Super Bowl XLVII alumnus Jameel McClain delighted fans by posing for photos. Poe and members of the cheer squad also joined the celebration.

“As an oncologist, I always say that prevention is better than a cure, and early detection is critical,” said Masha Mohebtash, MD, medical director of MedStar Health Community Oncology. “Raising awareness is crucial. Events like this are important for patients who are navigating so much mentally, emotionally and physically. They give patients a chance to forget about all their cancer treatment, relax and enjoy themselves.”

Guests enjoyed traditional game-day fare provided by the culinary team at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. They also played tailgate games, made "I Fight For" signs, and created their own custom trading cards.

“Sometimes you feel isolated, but they bring you out and they celebrate you, and they bring you into a place where you feel like you're still a part of life and living. And you want to live. You want to fight. I'm grateful,” said stomach cancer survivor Tamara Parker.

The NFL’s Crucial Catch campaign started in 2009 to remind fans about the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer. MedStar Health is proud to partner with the Ravens again for Crucial Catch in 2026.
