Abnormal Menstruation Symptoms & Diagnosis | MedStar Health

Abnormal menstruation can refer to absence of periods (amenorrhea) or heavier menstrual flow such as a period lasting longer than 7 days or associated with bleeding between cycles or after menopause.

Causes include:

  • Stress and weight change

  • Birth control pills

  • Benign (noncancerous) growths such as fibroids (which attach to the uterine wall)

  • Polyps (which can grow along the inner lining of the uterus)

Other causes include endometriosis, which occurs when the innermost lining of the uterus (endometrium) tissue starts to grow outside the uterus, pelvic inflammatory disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, bleeding disorders, thyroid gland disorders, other complications associated with pregnancy and menopause.

It is important to see a trained and experienced doctor to correctly diagnose and treat this problem. Women suffering from pelvic pain need a doctor who can treat the whole person. Our multidisciplinary team looks at all the possible causes of pelvic pain in order to make an accurate diagnosis and tailor a treatment plan for you.

At our state-of-the-art center, we will conduct a thorough evaluation including an endometrial biopsy, sonohysterogram (pelvic ultrasound), MRI, or hysteroscopy (insertion of lighted telescope into the uterus) when indicated.
