What is Hematuria? | MedStar Health

Hematuria refers to blood in the urine, which may be microscopic (visible only under a microscope) or gross (visible to the naked eye).

It can be caused by a wide number of conditions in the urinary tract, including infection, stones, or tumor/cancer. The presence of blood in the urine doesn’t necessarily mean there is cancer, it is important to have this evaluated by a urologist.

The work-up may include some urine tests, imaging (ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI) and investigation with a telescope (cystoscopy) to help us identify the cause, or at least rule out, anything concerning that requires further treatment.
