Hussein M. Tahan, PhD, RN, FAAN is the system vice president for nursing professional development and workforce planning for MedStar Health. In this role Tahan works collaboratively with MedStar’s senior vice president and system chief nursing executive, and entity chief nursing officers to drive innovation in nursing professional development and workforce planning that supports more than 8,700 professional nurses. He serves as an executive liaison to the MedStar Professional Development Collaborative Governance Council and project lead for the implementation of MedStar’s state-of-the-art interdisciplinary care delivery model across MedStar Health hospital entities, including contemporary primary nursing, relationship-based care and case management.

Tahan has more than 25 years of experience in acute-care nursing, having worked in a variety of settings and healthcare systems. Prior to joining MedStar in December 2014, Tahan was corporate director of Nursing Research and Education at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Tahan has been involved in case management since 1990. In almost every position Tahan has held it included case management oversight where he has effected practice transformation in areas such as bringing case managers to the forefront of clinical care management, enhancing their contribution to the organization’s bottom line, advocating for them and their value, promoting interprofessional case management practice, and modernizing practice models to align with the ever changing dynamics of the environment of healthcare delivery. In 2016, the Case Management Society of America recognized Tahan with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the practice of case management.

Tahan has served on various national panels pertaining to nursing and patient care and quality, including the National Quality Forum Care Coordination Technical Advisory Panel, the GE Healthcare/Monitoring Solutions Consumer Advisory Board, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality peer review panel on Comparative Effectiveness of Case Management for Adults with Medical Illness and Complex Care Needs, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Bundled Payment Demonstration Projects peer review committee.

Tahan holds a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing from Columbia University, a Master of Science in nursing administration from the College of Mount St. Vincent, both in New York, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon.

Tahan is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association, Case Management Society of America, the National Transitions of Care Coalition, The Association for Nursing Professional Development, elected fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, and inducted fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
