Wisdom Teeth Removal |Recovery | MedStar Health

While wisdom teeth removal is one of the more common oral surgery procedures performed by our oral surgeons, we understand that patients may be nervous about having the procedure done. This is why we explain every part of the procedure—preparing for the surgery, what happens during the extraction, and what to expect during your recovery.

Your wisdom teeth are the third molars in the back of your mouth. Your oral surgeon, orthodontist, or dentist may recommend removing your wisdom teeth for the following reasons:

  • Your wisdom teeth are impacted (trapped) before they have a chance to erupt (come through the gum line)
  • The teeth become infected
  • The teeth are affecting your other teeth, pushing or crowding them, causing poor alignment, which is harmful to your teeth and jaw health
