About me
Dr. Francis G. Tirol, FAES, is a board-certified neurologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where he specializes in clinical neurophysiology, epilepsy, and general neurology. He delivers advanced, compassionate care to adults who have a wide range of seizure disorders including complex cases where seizures have not responded to medications. Dedicated to patient-centered care, Dr. Tirol works to help individuals reduce both the frequency and duration of their seizures by uncovering underlying causes and developing personalized, effective treatment plans.
Dr. Tirol’s medical journey began at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He continued with a neurology residency at NYU School of Medicine and then completed fellowship training in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at UCLA/David Geffen School of Medicine. This comprehensive education has prepared him to care for patients across the full spectrum of epilepsy. He currently serves as vice chair of clinical operations and associate professor in the Department of Neurology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, a nationally recognized academic and research medical center.
Working with a dedicated multidisciplinary team—including a skilled neurosurgeon and a patient coordinator—Dr. Tirol provides each patient with seamless, well-coordinated care. For those whose seizures continue despite trying two or more medications, he carefully assesses advanced treatment options such as surgery, device therapy, or other innovative approaches that may offer better seizure control. By prioritizing early evaluation, Dr. Tirol ensures that patients with uncontrolled seizures can access more effective therapies as soon as possible.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Tirol is the program director of the Epilepsy Fellowship and associate program director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship, playing an important role in training the next generation of epilepsy specialists. He is also active in national clinical trials exploring new therapies for both focal and generalized epilepsies and frequently presents his research at leading medical conferences. As a member of the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Tirol contributes to the field through service on editorial boards and review panels, helping to bring the latest advances into clinical practice.
