WASHINGTON – The latest data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) shows MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, performs more kidney and pancreas transplants than any other program in the Washington, D.C. region. Fifty total pancreas transplants were completed in 2024, which is the largest volume in the country. MedStar Georgetown also performed 410 kidney transplants, including 80 living donor transplants last year.

“MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute is one of the highest volume organ transplant programs in the country and offers the expertise of some of the foremost U.S. transplant specialists,” said Thomas Fishbein, MD, the executive director of MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. “We have performed more than 10,000 liver, kidney, pancreas, small bowel, and multi-organ transplants. And our volumes speak volumes. That means patients treated at a high-volume center like ours have better surgical outcomes, less complications and shorter hospital stay.”

MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute offers the complete spectrum of care from evaluation and medical management to cutting-edge surgery and transplant procedures and provides hope and life-restoring treatments for patients with end-stage organ failure.

The region’s leading National Kidney Registry (NKR) Donor Shield program offers kidney donors a range of financial protections and support not available at any other program in Washington, D.C. MedStar Georgetown excels at treating complex patients who are highly sensitized or who have other conditions that make transplantation more challenging, many of whom have been turned away by other transplantation programs.
