About me

Brian Baturin, MD, is an imaging cardiologist with the structural heart team at the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Baturin practices advanced echocardiography with a focus on valvular heart disease.

Dr. Baturin specializes in interventional echocardiography, which requires an additional level of expertise beyond general cardiology. When patients are referred to the structural heart program, Dr. Baturin collaborates with the rest of the team to determine the most appropriate tests in order to advise decisions on treatment. Options for treatment include optimizing medical management, transcatheter intervention, or surgery when necessary.

At the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute, Dr. Baturin performs imaging studies for clinical trials for different types of transcatheter interventions. His considerations in determining whether a person is a candidate for transcatheter methods include the severity and etiology of the disease as well as the individual’s medical history. Dr. Baturin is interested in research that involves advanced echocardiography and structural heart imaging in order to better assess valvular disease and determine treatment options.

Dr. Baturin is committed to helping his patients fully understand the nature of their individual conditions and their treatment options. His desire is for every patient he sees to be assured that their concerns are important to him and that their questions will be heard and answered. He is very excited to be working in the rapidly expanding field of valvular heart disease.

Dr. Baturin has completed an advanced echocardiography fellowship at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He received his medical degree from Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School. He then completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, followed by a three-year cardiovascular disease fellowship at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the American Society of Echocardiography.

Outside of work, Dr. Baturin loves traveling, spending time with his wife and son, and exploring D.C. area parks.

Philosophy of care
“Because of all the options we have in the field of cardiology and valvular heart disease, I think shared decision making is very important; having a thorough discussion about the patient’s thoughts and values and what they want to get out of their care.

“In this day and age, it’s important to have an imaging specialist who is trained in performing and interpreting these specialized echocardiograms involved in the care of these patients. For patients with severe or complex valvular heart disease, the best care is provided when we utilize a heart team approach including an imaging specialist, and that’s what I bring.”
