About me
Charlotte Gamble, MD, MPH, is an attending gynecologic oncologist based at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital. As a specialist in gynecologic cancers, she sees patients for the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the uterus, ovary, cervix, vulva, and vagina.
Her treatment methods include a multi-modality approach, in which she employs the use of immunotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and surgery, depending on the specific needs of each patient. Dr. Gamble works closely with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, such as radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and pathologists, as well as her clinical team of residents, fellows, physicians assistants, and nurse navigators to provide the optimal tailored treatment plan for her patients.
As a community advocate, Dr. Gamble is dedicated to taking care of patients who have historically been marginalized and are vulnerable to poor health outcomes. She provides all patients with excellent and equitable care. Her research examines the role of safety net hospital systems in gynecologic cancer care.
Dr. Gamble received her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. While getting her medical degree, Dr. Gamble completed a Master of Public Health degree with a focus on health policy at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She completed obstetrics & gynecology residency at Duke University Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident for Education. She completed her fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Columbia and Weill Cornell Medical Centers, before joining MedStar Health. She is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the National Medical Association.
Dr. Gamble is recognized for her dedication to her field and to teaching. During her residency at Duke, she was awarded the Golden Apple Teaching Award, the Michelle P. Winn Inclusive Excellence Award. She received the outstanding fellow research award at Weill Cornell Hospital.
Philosophy of Care
“I became a doctor because physicians can have such a powerfully unique role in advocating for women’s health – improving and pushing the system to do better, specifically for vulnerable patients. It is a privilege to care for patients with gynecologic cancer and to gain their trust, holding space for them as they make decisions about their health in the context of their daily lives. Every day, I feel lucky to be in my position and to get to do this work. At my core, I am driven by justice – providing equitable care to all my patients, understanding that the systems we live and work in have not always been fair, and helping to remove barriers patients face in getting timely, quality care.
“My team and I are committed to accompanying each patient throughout the entire process -- diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. We integrate whatever support they have or don’t have – friends, family, community – into how we deliver care, and take care of them like our own loved ones. While a lot of what determines how well patients do is from how advanced and how aggressive their disease is at the time of diagnosis – another really important part is supporting them emotionally & socially - providing compassionate, ‘whole person’ care so that we can get patients through the necessary treatment with minimal breaks and delays."
