About me

Jonathan Gardner, MD, FACC, is a general cardiologist at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center who treats patients for a wide range of heart-related disorders, from preventative care to advanced heart failure. He is board-certified in general cardiology and nuclear cardiology.

As a general cardiologist, Dr. Gardner’s approach is highly informed by his extensive experience in advanced heart failure. As part of his training, he completed a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. He brings his knowledge of these specialties and a holistic perspective to his general cardiology clinic, providing exceptional care to his patients.

According to Dr. Gardner, cardiovascular medicine requires a teamwork mentality that includes not only the patient but also the referring physicians and other medical professionals involved. He is passionate about advocating for all his patients when it comes to cardiovascular care—educating his patients, especially young people, on how to prevent future heart complications and actively treating heart issues when they occur in patients of all ages. He prides himself in being highly skilled in treating advanced heart failure patients as well as having a down-to-earth bedside manner.

Dr. Gardner’s clinical interests revolve around preventative and after-care practices that reduce recidivism in advanced heart failure patients with comorbidities.

Dr. Gardner has had exposure to multiple communities and demographics. He looks forward to leveraging the resources and collaborative expertise of the larger hospital system and the team of professionals at MedStar.

Dr. Gardner obtained his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine Dominica, West Indies, where he was class president and graduated with honors. Following graduation, he went on to complete his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was Chief Resident. Next, he was a general cardiology fellow at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Lastly, he obtained a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center.

He is a professional member of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA), the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT).

Philosophy of Care

“My philosophy of care is a team-based approach. No one can do this alone, and as physicians and medical professionals, we must work together to serve our patients. I am passionate about my work and can’t see myself doing anything else. While my journey hasn’t always been easy, I believe that success can be obtained through perseverance and hard work. My promise to my patients is that I will work with them until we get things right and they are living a fulfilled life.

“When patients meet with me, they can expect someone who works closely with them and encourages them towards success. Referring physicians should know that I enjoy being a team player and am always available to consult and collaborate for the betterment of our patients.

“Finally, family is extremely important to me, so I would like to thank my parents, my grandparents, my brother, my uncle Luis, and most importantly, my wife for supporting my journey in medicine. I would also like to dedicate my care to my baby girl.”
