About me
Neggin B. Mokhtari, MD, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist affiliated with MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and MedStar Health at Brandywine. She is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Mokhtari is a Washington, D.C. area native and joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center as an attending physician because of the sense of community and the breadth of specialties and expertise available to patients.
Dr. Mokhtari sees patients for all high-risk obstetrical conditions, including, but not limited to, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, pregestational and gestational diabetes, thyroid conditions, rheumatologic disorders, cardiovascular disorders, hematologic disorders, substance use, abnormal placentation, advanced maternal age, recurrent pregnancy loss, fetal anomalies, and genetic conditions in the mother and fetus.
Rooted in a strong belief in collaboration and teamwork, Dr. Mokhtari works with each patient’s primary OB/GYN to optimize pregnancy care. In her practice, she offers preconception counseling as well as medical and surgical treatments, including cerclage placement for short cervix or history of preterm delivery and prenatal diagnostic procedures, such as CVS (chorionic villus sampling) and amniocentesis. She is dedicated to helping pregnant women with antepartum and postpartum care.
Dr. Mokhtari received her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where she graduated magna cum laude, and completed a four-year obstetrics and gynecology residency at Magee-Women’s Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she was named Teaching Chief Resident. She then joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center/MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for a three-year maternal-fetal medicine fellowship, where she was named Fellow of the Year. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Her research interests include substance use and opioid maintenance therapy in pregnancy. She also piloted a study on an educational video on pain management and subsequent opioid use after cesarean delivery, which showed a reduction in opioid use after the viewing of the video. She is also interested in studying health disparities among pregnant people.
Dr. Mokhtari is fluent in English and Farsi.
Philosophy of Care
“Pregnancy is an exciting, yet scary, time of life. I will hold my patient’s hand and accompany them through this exciting time while taking care of them and taking care of their medical problems, whether that be the pregnant mother or the baby. My patients should know that I will support them and advocate for them throughout their pregnancy.
“I always treat my patients like they are my own family. I make sure that they know that they’re very important to me.
“I feel honored when my patients say that I listened to their concerns, gave them the time and attention they needed, provided the best care, and that I advocated for their best interests as well as their baby’s.
“I look forward to making relationships with referring community providers and helping in any way I can. I am available to referring physicians for any questions or concerns, as well as formal consults.
“My grandfather, who took part in raising me, was an OB/GYN in Iran. I always told him I wanted to be a doctor, and I fell in love with OB/GYN while in medical school. His picture sits on my desk at work and is a reminder of the ways that he has helped so many women, and how I can do the same.”
