About me
William Yoon, MD, PhD, is a board-certified vascular surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and Union Memorial Hospital, and the Director of the Complex Aortic Center at MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute.
An endovascular specialist, Dr. Yoon treats the full spectrum of vascular disease, including aortic aneurysms and dissections, carotid artery stenosis, and mesenteric and renal artery aneurysms. He delivers compassionate, personalized care through open communication and shared decision-making.
Dr. Yoon specializes in cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques, particularly for patients deemed too high-risk for traditional open surgery, allowing for faster recovery times and smaller incisions. A pioneer in complex endovascular aortic repair and an expert in Fenestrated and Branched Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (FEVAR/BEVAR), he was the first to perform advanced procedures such as double inner-branched endovascular aortic arch repair in Illinois and four-vessel fenestrated endovascular aortic repair within the University Hospitals system.
Before joining MedStar Health, Dr. Yoon was Co-Director of the Aortic Center at University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve University, with extensive experience using innovative devices such as the Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis (TAMBE). He was also the first physician in Ohio to successfully deploy the Iliac Branch Endoprosthesis (IBE). His research focuses on advancing endovascular management of aortic disease through patient- and anatomy-specific solutions and addressing limitations of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR).
He earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, followed by general surgery training at Henry Ford St. John Hospital. He completed vascular surgery fellowship training at Loyola University Medical Center, advanced endovascular aortic training at Paracelsus Medical University in Germany, and advanced aortic surgery training at Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden, where he earned his PhD.
Dr. Yoon has received numerous awards recognizing his clinical, research, and teaching excellence, including a Top Doctor Recognition in the Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors and a Service Values Award from NorthShore University Health System.
He is a leading member of the Society of Vascular Surgery, the European Society for Vascular Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, and the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society.
Philosophy of Care
“My priority is caring for each patient as an individual, not just treating a condition. Vascular issues can be frightening, so my goal is to walk alongside my patients and provide reassurance and comfort. I have a passion for technical precision and am dedicated to providing transformative, innovative, and personalized care for patients with complex diseases.”
