Glenn Meininger

Glenn Meininger, MD, FACC, is the Director of Electrophysiology at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center and Associate Chief of Cardiology. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland and routinely teaches medical students and residents in electrocardiography and arrhythmia interpretation. In addition, he is the Director of Electrophysiology for a large urban and suburban cardiology practice with more than 3000 device patients and 600 implants per year.

Dr. Meininger's research interest is in electrophysiology, including management of atrial fibrillation, treatment of arrhythmia, as well as device management. His prior research experience includes using a novel ultrasound ablation system for the management of atrial fibrillation and developing strategies for electrophysiologic evaluation in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment.

He currently is principal investigator for numerous trials relating to the field of electrophysiology, including drug studies for the management of ventricular tachycardia/ventricular fibrillation, defibrillator studies involving optimal programming algorithms, new indications for defibrillator therapies, and analysis of lead function. He has interests in remote monitoring and arrhythmia management algorithms.

Dr. Meininger has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles published in leading medical journals, such as Heart Rhythm, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, Circulation, and the American Journal of Cardiology. In addition, he has written a book chapter and presented and spoken across the United States on topics relating to atrial fibrillation, sudden cardiac death, arrhythmia evaluation, as well as pacing and defibrillator indications and management. Dr. Meininger is a member of the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, and the Heart Rhythm Society. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.

His medical degree is from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he also completed an internship and a residency in Internal Medicine, as well as cardiology training, during which he served as Chief Fellow, completing electrophysiology and a 2-year research fellowship.

Selected Research

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Guided Cardiac Electrophysiology

In this research, published in Circulation (2008;118:223-9), Dr. Meininger and other investigators used real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to perform electrophysiology studies and cardiac ablation. The authors concluded that real-time MRI guidance of basic electrophysiology studies is feasible and may eliminate radiation exposure for patients and staff.

Pulmonary Vein Ablation

In this research, Dr. Meininger developed and tested a novel balloon ultrasound ablation catheter for the management of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This research allowed further understanding of the feasibility of performing left atrial ablation procedures using new ablation energy tools and balloon technology.
