Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training | MedStar Health SiTEL

A new standard in patient care

The way we deliver care is changing. Clinicians today need tools that match the pace and complexity of modern medicine: tools that help them act quickly, think clearly, and communicate better. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is answering that call, offering real-time imaging right at the bedside.

When used alongside the physical exam, POCUS enhances the provider’s ability to assess and diagnose in the moment. It improves accuracy, builds patient trust, and reduces the need for more invasive or delayed testing. From guiding procedures to confirming findings, it brings clarity to clinical decisions when time and confidence matter most.

Simulation-based training programs, created and led by MedStar Health SiTEL, are designed to help clinicians build those skills with confidence. Through structured, hands-on practice in a safe learning environment, learners gain the foundation they need to incorporate POCUS into daily care.

About the training

POCUS training at MedStar Health SiTEL is designed to be hands-on, practical, and aligned with real-world care settings. Learners train using high-fidelity ultrasound simulators, live models, and didactic instruction delivered by MedStar Health physician experts. Pre-course and post-course modules are also available to support continued learning.

Course options include:

  • 3-day combined course (covers all systems)
  • 2-day cardiac and pulmonary course
  • 2-day GI, urinary, and vascular course

Please note that the 2-day sessions are currently reserved for MedStar Health affiliates, though both MedStar Health and non-MedStar Health learners are eligible to enroll in the 3-day comprehensive course.

POCUS training at MedStar Health is designed for clinicians at all stages of their careers. The program welcomes attending physicians, residents, and fellows who want to deepen their diagnostic capabilities, as well as advanced practice providers—including nurse practitioners and physician assistants—seeking hands-on experience with ultrasound at the bedside.

How MedStar Health uses POCUS

MedStar Health has made POCUS a systemwide priority, integrating it into clinical education and expanding access to training across roles and departments.

MedStar Health SiTEL supports this growth through:

  • Dedicated training courses for MedStar Health and non-MedStar Health clinicians
  • Simulation-based curriculum embedded in medical education and residency training
  • Custom sessions hosted in partnership with service lines like emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine
  • POCUS exposure for medical students through Georgetown University School of Medicine
  • Ongoing development of instructional materials and ultrasound image interpretation support

Explore POCUS at MedStar Health

MedStar Health SiTEL supports outreach and on-site training across the system, but most frequently, POCUS training sessions are hosted at the MedStar Health SiTEL Clinical Simulation Center in Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, MD, using the latest ultrasound equipment and real clinical scenarios.
