Thank you for considering an Administrative Fellowship with MedStar Health. I began my career as the Administrative Fellow at MedStar Health's largest hospital, the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, more than 30 years ago. Since then, I have been a firm believer in not only the invaluable experience the fellow can gain, but the fresh perspective you can bring to our organization.
This fellowship is unique in that the fellow is not located within one of our hospitals. Rather, the fellow is based at MedStar's corporate office in Columbia, MD.
At the system level, the fellow provides staff support to projects of interest to you. In addition, the fellow has the unique opportunity to attend MedStar Health Board meetings. Furthermore, the fellow will attend my Leadership Team meetings and Senior Manager Lecture Series to give you not only the perspective of important initiatives within our organization, but to observe the challenges and the way in which the MedStar Leadership Team and I address those challenges.
In addition, you will spend time at MedStar Health's 10 hospitals and 20 diversified organizations in Baltimore, MD, and Washington, D.C., working on various projects and attending hospital executive meetings and Board meetings.
Needless to say, the fellow experiences tremendous exposure to both system and hospital executives throughout the course of this fellowship. I encourage you to explore our website and to contact our current fellow with any additional questions you may have. On behalf of the leadership team at MedStar Health, thank you for exploring this unique opportunity and we look forward to your application.
Sincerely,
Kenneth A. Samet, FACHE
President and CEO
About the MedStar Health System Administrative Fellowship
The MedStar Health System Administrative Fellowship offers a unique, one-year experience in the management of a regional, not-for-profit integrated healthcare delivery system. The fellow reports directly to the President and CEO of MedStar Health, Kenneth Samet, the Executive Vice President and COO, Dr. Joy Drass, and the Senior Vice President of Performance Transformation, Jeffrey Matton. The fellow is responsible for providing staff support and leadership to designated projects, while working closely with system and hospital leaders. The fellow will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of how hospital and ambulatory operations integrate across the healthcare system and are supported by corporate services. The fellow also has the opportunity to:
- Participate in high-level discussions regarding the myriad of strategic and operational issues affecting the system
- Interact extensively and develop working relationships with the MedStar Health Leadership Team
- Provide support to operational services projects, both at the corporate level and at various hospital and ambulatory sites
- Receive mentoring from seasoned healthcare executives
How does the fellowship work?
The fellowship begins with orientation through many corporate and operational services, however to a great extent, the fellowship is self-directed. Fellows are encouraged to apply their individual background, interests and experience in the work environment in order to contribute to the system while gaining an in-depth understanding of an integrated healthcare delivery system. The administrative fellow is based out of the corporate office in Columbia, MD. However, as the fellow develops working relationships with the entire MedStar Health Leadership Team, he/she will participate in various projects and initiatives across MedStar Health’s 10 hospitals and diversified organizations, including MedStar Ambulatory Services sites, MedStar Medical Group and Managed Care initiatives. The fellow will have the opportunity to support operational service projects, both at the corporate level and at various hospital and ambulatory sites, including patient safety, clinical outcomes, service line operations, information technology, supply chain management, technology assessment, risk reduction, and quality care initiatives.
