Vibrant quilts bring creativity and color to emergency department waiting area.
LEONARDTOWN, Md – MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and the St. Mary’s County Arts Council have unveiled the third installment of their rotating art exhibition in the hospital’s emergency department. Since June, new artwork has been installed every three months as part of a philanthropy-led initiative to create a more welcoming, healing environment for patients, visitors, and associates.
The latest exhibit features vibrant, handsewn art quilts by Washington, D.C. artist Andrea “Andi” Cullins. Her collection, Second Life Quilter, features intricate mosaics made from hand-cut fabric, rich in color, movement, and emotion. The quilts will be on display through January 2026.
“We’re thrilled to showcase Andi’s incredible work,” said Emily Stagner, assistant vice president of philanthropy, who organized the partnership. “The art wall is part of our ongoing effort to enhance the healing environment for patients, visitors, and associates by highlighting local talent.”
Created in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Arts Council, the art wall launched in June and has showcased work from local and international artists. This new installation introduces a fresh medium to the series, following earlier exhibits of traditional paintings.
“All of the artists featured have been members of the St. Mary’s County Arts Council,” Stagner added. “This partnership has allowed us to provide remarkable works of art that offer inspiration and comfort to our patients, visitors, and associates.”
Art is a second career for Cullins, a longtime resident of the DC metro area. Following a more than 40-year career in corporate executive search, she retired in 2019 after battling cancer. During retirement, she rekindled the creative spark she first discovered as a student in the Philadelphia public schools’ Saturday Art League.
Cullins’ work has been widely recognized since she began her Second Life Quilter collection in 2020. Her quilts have been exhibited throughout the region, including solo shows with the St. Mary’s County Arts Council, The Catholic University of America, and The Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia. She has also been featured in Southern Maryland magazine and honored as the visual artist for Prince George’s County’s 2021 Juneteenth celebration.
