Many people experience side effects from treatment.

Please note that each MedStar Health cancer clinic has a 24-hour line available to you. Always follow your specific care team’s instructions for red-flag symptoms and when to call.

Generally, you should call your care team right away if you are in cancer treatment and:

  • Have not eaten or had liquids for 24 hours
  • Have not passed gas, urine, or had a bowel movement in 24 hours
  • Have vomited four to five times in 24 hours
  • Have severe diarrhea that does not improve with medications
  • Have trouble breathing
  • Have flu-like symptoms

If you experience a fever of 100.4 or higher, go to the emergency room and call your care team or your cancer clinic’s 24-hour line.
