What is hip arthroscopy?

It is a minimally invasive joint surgery that allows an orthopedic surgeon to repair portions of the hip without making a large incision. The surgery is performed using an arthroscope, which is a small camera that lets your doctor view the inside of your injured hip.

The surgery is often preferred over traditional open surgery because it usually requires less downtime after surgery and may result in less pain during and after the procedure.

Why is hip arthroscopy performed?

If non-surgical treatment does not improve your condition, you may need surgery. The orthopedic surgeons at MedStar Health are experienced in the most advanced and innovative hip arthroscopy procedures.

Arthroscopic hip surgery is an ideal option for patients who need surgery but would prefer a minimally invasive approach. You may be a good candidate for hip arthroscopy if you suffer from any of the following:

What does hip arthroscopy involve?

During arthroscopy, your surgeon inserts a small camera, called an arthroscope, into the hip joint. This allows your surgeon to see inside your joints without making a large, painful incision.

Once the arthroscope is in place, your surgeon will then insert specialized instruments through the arthroscope and into your hip joint to repair your damage

What does recovery involve?

Recovery is generally much faster and less painful than with traditional open hip surgery. Our physicians will work with you to develop an individualized recovery plan, which may include physical therapy and using crutches or a walker for a period of time following your procedure.

What are the benefits?

Our goal is for you to experience the following benefits after having hip arthroscopy surgery:

  • Pain relief
  • Restored range of motion in hip
  • Improved strength
  • Ability to bear weight on the hip for longer periods of time
  • Ability to return to normal activities faster than with traditional surgery
