About me
Jay Kirkham, DO, is an interventional pulmonologist and critical care physician who practices at the Angelos Center for Lung Diseases at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. He specializes in minimally invasive and robotic techniques to diagnose and treat lung cancer and other complex lung diseases. Dr. Kirkham is playing a critically important role as MedStar Health works to build a truly comprehensive lung diagnostic and treatment program, with focus on streamlining the process of care for patients.
Dr. Kirkham collaborates closely with thoracic surgeons to offer Combined Robotic Assisted Thoracic Surgery (CRATS). Using robotic technology and state-of-the-art scopes in MedStar Health’s hybrid operating room, this procedure allows for the diagnosis, treatment, and removal of lung nodules, with one visit to the operating room. The team also collaborates to build and deploy new programs to optimize care and outcomes for patients, such as MedStar Health’s Lung Screening Program, which gives members of the community an opportunity be evaluated and pointed to a specialist for care, if needed, and the Incidental Lung Nodule Program, which provides a process for masses in the lung to be detected by default, and addressed, as other health screenings and medical care takes place.
Dr. Kirkham is board certified in both critical care medicine and internal medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree at Midwestern University and completed both residency and fellowship training at the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. Kirkham’s Philosophy of Care
“Personalized patient care is so important, especially in working with patients diagnosed with cancer and other complex lung diseases. Sometimes I have to look people in the eye and tell them difficult news. But I also assure them that whatever their journey entails, I will go through it with them. The relationships and interactions I have had with my patients have truly shaped my life and have made me the person and the physician I am today.”
