Kurtis Bertram, DPM, is a fellowship-trained attending foot and ankle specialist at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center.

Dr. Bertram sees patients for fracture care, ligament and tendon pathology, foot and ankle deformities, Charcot neuroarthropathy and diabetic foot care. He performs minimally invasive operative techniques such as minimally invasive bunionectomy, minimally invasive ligament reconstruction, and arthroscopy. He’s also specialty trained in Charcot reconstruction, external fixation, and limb salvage/wound care.

The first aspect of Dr. Bertram’s care involves evaluating the patient’s pathology and understanding what the patient’s goals are for care. He believes in exploring conservative non-operative measures, when appropriate, before considering surgery. If surgery is necessary, he guides patients pre-operative planning and-post operative rehabilitation to minimize complications and maximize results.

His clinical interests include trauma, sports medicine, ligament and tendon pathology, bunions, flat foot, cavus foot, ankle deformity, arthritic conditions, limb salvage, and Charcot reconstruction. He is currently involved in a research project with Kaiser Permanente that focuses on different bone-grafting techniques that increase the fusion rate in foot and ankle arthrodesis.

Dr. Bertram received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He joined MedStar Health for a residency in podiatric surgery and then completed a specialty fellowship with Kaiser Permanente in foot and ankle trauma and reconstruction. He is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Philosophy of Care

“My philosophy of care is simple, yet is at the forefront of every moment that I’m with my patients and coordinating their care -- to give patients the best treatment possible in order to give them the best quality of life possible.

“Foot and ankle injuries and deformities have an enormous impact on someone’s quality of life. I’m passionate about helping my patients achieve the ability to move around comfortably in their maximum capacity.

“I feel honored when my patients say that I listened, that I was honest, and that they understood all of their treatment options.

“I’m available to referring physicians to provide collaborative care for their patients. Focused on what serves the patient best, I firmly believe in keeping the lines of communication open between practitioners.”
