About me
Leila Shobab, MD is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology/Diabetes and Metabolism. Dr. Shobab is an Assistant Professor (Clinician Research Track) in the Department of Medicine at Georgetown University and a Clinical Investigator within the joint Endocrine Program at MedStar Georgetown University-MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. Shobab completed her medical education at the University of British Columbia, where she earned her MD and completed her residency in Internal Medicine. She then went on to pursue a Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Toronto, followed by a Research Fellowship in Thyroid Cancer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Her clinical and research interest focus on thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases. As a Clinician Scientist, Dr. Shobab is dedicated to advancing both basic and translational research aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive aggressive thyroid cancers. A key focus of her work includes exploring the molecular basis of sex-dimorphism in thyroid cancer pathophysiology, progression and response to therapy. Additionally, she is investigating the role of immune responses in the development and progression of aggressive thyroid cancers.
Dr. Shobab is a Research Affiliate at the Cancer Host Interaction Program, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has also served as a Guest Researcher at the National Institutes of Health and has ongoing collaborations with colleagues at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Uniformed Services University Health Sciences Hospital (USUHS).
A member of several professional organizations, including the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and the Endocrine Society, Dr. Shobab has received multiple honors for her clinical and research contributions. Notably, she is the recipient of the 2024 Women Advancing Thyroid Research (WATR) Award from the American Thyroid Association sponsored by Mary Ann Liebert though the Rosalind Franklin Society.
She believes in providing compassionate, patient-centered care, grounded in trust, respect, and a non-judgmental approach, with a focus on the individual needs of each person.
