About me
Matteo Fabbri, MD, is a double board-certified cardiologist with a subspecialty in heart failure and transplant at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Dr. Fabbri treats the full spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, with expertise in advanced heart failure, right ventricular failure, pulmonary hypertension, heart transplant management, and mechanical heart pump (LVAD).
Dr. Fabbri specializes in the evaluation and management of patients with advanced heart failure, offering the latest treatment options, including temporary mechanical circulatory support when appropriate, and comprehensive care for heart transplant recipients. In select cases, he also incorporates genetic testing to identify the underlying factors of pulmonary hypertension and cardiomyopathy.
Known for his warm and approachable manner, Dr. Fabbri begins each consultation by thoroughly explaining his patient’s diagnosis and answering any questions about treatment options in easy-to-understand terms. Through this collaborative approach, he empowers patients with the information and resources they need to live longer, healthier lives.
Originally from Italy, Dr. Fabbri completed his medical training at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he graduated summa cum laude. He then moved to the US, where he earned a Master's in Science from the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Science. He went on to complete his residency at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NYC, where he earned the Intern of the Month award for excellence in service during the COVID-19 pandemic for 2 consecutive months, and the Best Ambulatory Resident of the Year award for providing excellent care. He then completed two fellowship trainings, one in cardiovascular disease at Inova Medical Center and the other in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Mount Sinai Hospital.
In his free time, Dr. Fabbri enjoys playing the violin, which he began during the COVID-19 pandemic isolation. He also likes checking in on his family’s cat, who has been living well with 8 years of heart failure, just by taking his pills.
Philosophy of Care
“I try to empower patients with the knowledge that I have so that they can achieve their goals and play an active role in their treatment plan. As a first-generation college graduate, I deeply empathize with the challenge of navigating the healthcare system. My approach is one of partnership and trust, so I take the time to build relationships with my patients.”
