Catalyzing a superior patient experience in perioperative care

Across nine acute-care facilities, MedStar Health teams perform more than 80,000 surgeries and 31,000 endoscopy procedures annually. Performance Improvement (PI) partnered with Perioperative Services to launch a multi-year transformation to improve the quality and coordination of care, efficiency of operations, and associate engagement. Foundational to this effort was the establishment of systemwide and entity Perioperative Governance Councils (PGCs), who would serve as governing bodies for oversight.

After a full year operating under the governance of the PGCs, perioperative leaders have greater visibility into performance metrics and can quickly shift from understanding performance to making data-driven decisions. The collaborative PI efforts at MedStar have also improved communication between hospitals while systematizing procedures and policies to deliver the best possible outcomes for perioperative patients.
