Third annual event removes barriers to participation and connects families to essential health resources.

BALTIMORE, Md.- For many young athletes across Baltimore, the biggest obstacle to playing sports is not making the team. It is getting the required sports physical before they can compete.

Without that medical clearance, students cannot step onto the field, regardless of their passion or talent. For many Baltimore City families, the cost of a physical, which can range from $50 to $100, can keep children on the sidelines.

To eliminate that barrier, MedStar Health and Under Armour, working with Baltimore City schools, will host the third annual Project Rampart event on Saturday, June 6, offering free sports physicals and health resources to Baltimore City student-athletes. Additionally, Under Armour will be hosting a Student Athlete Celebration on their adjoining turf field where they will be distributing giveaways and gear, including sports bras.

MedStar Health partners with Under Armor to provide sports physicals for Baltimore student athletes.“When students have access to a free sports physical, they gain much more than medical clearance to play,” said Sean Huffman, vice president, MedStar Health Sports Medicine. “They gain the opportunity to be part of a team, build confidence, stay active, and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Project Rampart helps remove financial barriers, so every young athlete has the chance to get in the game.”

But Project Rampart’s event goes beyond providing sports physicals. MedStar Health physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, athletic trainers, and associates will conduct exams and screenings while connecting families with educational materials and information on nutrition, injury prevention, and local healthcare resources. Whenever follow-up care is needed, families are connected to services close to home, helping reduce transportation and access barriers.

The impact has been significant. At the most recent event, held at Under Armour’s Global Headquarters in Baltimore, Project Rampart provided free sports physicals to more than 800 students from all across the city.

“At Under Armour, we believe every young athlete deserves the opportunity to play and perform with confidence,” said Blake Maciel, Director of Project Rampart at Under Armour. “Under Armour’s Project Rampart initiative is about eliminating barriers to access in youth sport which includes ensuring our young people have everything they need to play safely, from required physicals to essential gear, like sports bras.”

“These events might even save lives,” Huffman said. “You find a heart murmur, an unaddressed injury, or any condition, you find something that may never have been found.”
